Psychoanalysts in Atlanta have gathered informally to discuss their work and host speakers since the 1960's. In 1973, local analysts created the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society. The purpose of the organization is "to advance the knowledge of psychoanalysis, to hold meetings for that purpose, to foster integration of psychoanalytic thought into the existing body of scientific knowledge, and to encourage psychoanalytic research in all fields having to do with the well-being of mankind."
The Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society sponsors an annual series of scientific programs with presentations given by members and other nationally recognized analysts. In addition, the society sponsors a yearly Extension Course that has been a mainstay for continuing education in the Atlanta mental health community.
