Requesting a J-1 visa for a new scholar

Important policy regarding J-1 Non-Degree students!

  • Procedure for Online Request
    • Collect the items needed to support the case (see list below).
    • If you have not already done so, apply online at the HR website for access to the ISSP functions of HR web. Navigate to http://emory.hr.emory.edu/eu/managerstoolkit/index.html and click on "ISSP Functions Access Request". The system will take you through the rest of the process. (The international scholar/employee will not be given access to the ISSP functions. The online form must be filled out and submitted by the hosting department.)
    • Complete the ISSP on-line request form in Peoplesoft according to the instructional presentation - download a PowerPoint presentation here or in a pdf here.
    • Print out the DRF Request Form and Compliance Form from Peoplesoft, collect necessary signatures (departmental supervisor of the prospective employee, departmental chair, Medical school only - Dean's signature). Attach the form to the required documentation (see list below), and submit the application to Joan Lindsey at ISSP.
  • Items that need to be turned in to the ISSP to process the J-1 request: (All supporting documents must have accompanying English translations.)
    • Hardcopy of the DRF Request and Compliance Form printed from Peoplesoft, with original signatures
    • The Supervisor of the prospective exchange visitor must provide a brief statement that the Exchange Visitor has the necessary language proficiency to successfully pursue program, and what assessment method was used.
    • Curriculum vitae
    • One of the following two options can be used as objective evidence attesting to the Exchange Visitor’s credentials:
      1. Copy of a diploma or transcripts for an advanced degree relative to exchange visitor's anticipated program, or
      2. Both of the following:
        1. Letter of reference from supervisor/colleague in the field, from outside Emory University that indicates the Exchange Visitor’s level of degree earned, AND
        2. An excerpt from one of the Exchange Visitor’s publications (Title page with Exchange Visitor’s name and page that indicates name of source (i.e., journal)
    • Evidence of financial support if coming from source outside Emory; Total financial support (Emory or an external source) must total at least the minimum of $2000/month per exchange visitor, plus $700/month for spouse, and $350/month per child.
    • Legible copy of passport biographic page(s) (include dependents' also if available).
    • If the prospective exchange visitor has been in the United States in J status within the past two years, all copies of prior Forms DS-2019 must be submitted.
    • Copy of offer letter from the department is helpful.
