ISSP's Spring Break Trip 2009

This year's trip to Asheville was a big success, with 24 students and scholars from Emory joining three ISSP staff members for a sun and fun-filled weekend.

After departing from Emory, we stopped for an authentic "Southern Buffet" at the Dillard House in northern Georgia, and continued on to Asheville.

Our tour guide, Bruce, took us for a two-hour trolley tour of the city with behind-the-scenes stories of Asheville and its growth during the "roaring (19)20s".

Though Asheville is home to only about 80,000 people, the city boasts over 50 Bed and Breakfast guesthomes, the famous Grove Park golf resort, as well as the Biltmore House. Over 1.1 million people visited Biltmore last year, and tourism accounts for nearly one-third of the economy.

Sunday was devoted to touring the Biltmore Estate, including the home, the stables, the gardens and grounds, as well as the winery.
