Tax Forms must be filed and postmarked before Midnight on April 15th

The Controllers Office held its two tax help sessions, one for scholars and one for students. Tuesday, April 15 is the deadline for filing both U.S. and state of Georgia tax returns. If you were unable to attend the tax help sessions, then follow this link to ISSP’s website - http://www.emory.edu/ISSP/news/finances/tax2008.html

This link will connect you to the article “Its Tax Time Again” and at the end of this article are links to handouts providing lists of tax preparers who can assist you depending on whether you are a nonresident or resident for tax purposes.

Below are instructions for using CINTAX in preparing your federal tax forms. CINTAX can not be used to complete the Georgia tax forms. Initially CINTAX will determine for you if you are a resident or non-resident for tax purposes. Residents for tax purposes can not use CINTAX in completing the federal tax forms. If you are a nonresident for tax purposes, you can use CINTAX to complete your federal tax forms. Once your federal tax forms are completed, you will have the necessary information to complete the Georgia tax forms. You can complete these forms on your own or refer to one of the services listed on the handouts located on ISSP’s website. Happy tax filing!

All nonresident aliens (with limited exceptions) who had income (Forms W-2, 1042S, and/or 1099) for calendar year 2007 must file an income tax return and F-1 and J-1 visa holders in exempt status (and their dependents) must file Form 8843!

Emory University has purchased a license to allow our international students and scholars, who are nonresidents for tax purposes, to complete their U.S. tax returns (Forms 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ and 8843) for the 2007 tax year online at anytime from anywhere in the world!

CINTAX supports Windows 2000/XP (Internet Explorer and Firefox) or MAC OSX (Safari and Firefox). CINTAX does NOT support Internet Explorer on a MAC. Javascript must be enabled to use CINTAX.

Be sure you have the following documents and information before using CINTAX:

  • Visa/Immigration Status information
  • Passport
  • Form I-94
  • Form DS-2019 if J status; Form I-20 if F status
  • Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (if you have been assigned one)
  • Addresses (current U.S. and foreign address)
  • U.S. entry and exit dates for current and past visits to the U.S.
  • Emory University sponsor information (see below)
  • Forms W-2, 1042-S, and/or 1099
  • Your 2006 income tax returns (if you filed returns for 2006)
  • Your Emory Network ID and password (if you do not know your password, call the Help Desk at 7-7777)

Set aside approximately 30 minutes to devote to completing the process - it is much easier to do it all at once than to have to start and stop repeatedly.

From the Emory homepage under About Us, click Administration and then go to Finance Division. Sign in with your Network ID and then click on the CINTAX icon (or follow this link). CINTAX is the sixth option on the left side of the screen.

The first time you log on to CINTAX you will be asked to create a new UserID. You must remember this UserID in order to be able to gain access to your information again after exiting CINTAX. Your e-mail address is required solely to contact you if there is a problem while you are using the system.

You will have the option to save your data until June 16, 2008 (so you can return with the same UserID to make corrections or changes) or to delete your data when you exit.

Just follow the instructions for each page to complete your return!

CINTAX will produce an Instruction Sheet and Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ (whichever is appropriate for your circumstances). Form 8843 will be produced for all F and J visa holders.

If you are an F or J visa holder with dependents in the United States, Form 8843 must be completed for each, even if they had no income. Sign in with your Network ID and create a new UserID, follow the instructions through the pages, and Form 8843 will be completed for your dependent! Mail each dependent Form 8843 to IRS in a separate envelope.
