You are Required to File a Tax Return Annually

Need Help?

CINTAX, the web-based program that allows you to complete your tax returns online will be available next week. You will be informed via e-mail when the web site goes live.

The Controller's Office and ISSP will also offer group and individual assistance in completing the state of Georgia tax form. Once you have attended a group session, if additional assistance is needed, you will be invited to attend an individual session. Attendance at a group session is required before you will be able to attend an individual session. For your calendar, here is the schedule for the sessions; the time and location will be announced later.

  • Scholars - March 23
  • Students - March 30

April 15 is the usual deadline date for filing both federal and state tax returns. However, since April 15 falls on a Saturday this year, your tax returns must be mailed and postmarked on or before April 17. Waiting to attend a tax session before filing your tax returns will allow you enough time to file your tax returns before the deadline. However, if you want to file before the tax sessions are held, you may use CINTAX or come to the ISSP office for a list of tax preparers.

Got the Necessary Documents?

If you were employed by Emory University between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2005, you should have already received a Form W-2. The form reports your salary and the amount that was deducted for taxes in 2005. The Form W-2 was sent from the Payroll Office around the end of January, unless you signed up to receive it online. If you have not received your Form W-2, please contact the Payroll Office, 404.727.6100.

Additionally, if all or part of your salary was exempt from taxes in 2005 because of a tax treaty benefit or if you received a scholarship, fellowship, stipend, or other non-work financial assistance from Emory, you will also receive a Form 1042S. The Form 1042S will be mailed to you on or about February 6. If you are a student or a scholar enrolled in a class, in addition to updating your address in the Human Resources database, you should also insure that your current local address is correct in OPUS. Click here for instructions on updating your address.

If you had US interest/dividend income, you should receive Form 1099 from the financial institution or payer of the interest or dividend income. Please insure that the financial institution has your current local address.

Ready to File?

If you have a tax treaty benefit and also received non-work financial assistance from Emory, DO NOT file your tax return until you have received both the W-2 and 1042S. If you had interest or dividend income, you should also wait for Form 1099.

Look for more information in upcoming editions of AC'CENT about CINTAX and the Tax Sessions. Meanwhile, just make sure that your local address is correct in all applicable places and that you have all tax documents that you need to file your tax return.
