Ask ISSP Column

Question: The end date on #5 of my I-20 Form is in May, 2007. I am not yet finished with my program of study. What should I do?

Answer: If the expiration of your I-20 is approaching and you have not yet completed your program, you will need to apply for a program extension through ISSP. This basically involves obtaining your academic advisor's approval for the extension (and amount of additional time needed) and providing proof of finances for the extension period. Further instructions and forms for program extension are located here.

Once you have turned in your completed forms for program extension, ISSP will be able to issue the new I-20 with new end date usually within 5-7 business days. Remember that you must obtain the program extension *before* the current end date on your I-20 or you will be out of status.

Another reminder:

If you will complete your program of study by the end date on your I-20 and it is approaching soon, you must do one of the following:

  • Leave the U.S. within 60 days of your program end date
  • Apply for a change of status to another non-immigrant status within 60 days of your end date
  • Transfer your F-1 status by entering a new degree program OR
  • Apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT). Remember that OPT must be applied for before the end date of your program. It is not possible to apply for OPT after the end date of your program during the 60-day grace period.
