IMMIGRATION UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Calling All F-1 December Graduates! – Applying for Optional Practical Training As you prepare for exams, submitting your thesis or defending, don’t forget that it is time to apply for optional practical training (OPT). “What is OPT?” It is an opportunity to gain one year of work experience directly related to your major. There are two types – pre-completion and post-completion. To qualify you must have maintained your status for at least one full academic year. OPT can be done part-time while school is in session or full-time after completion of studies and during vacation periods. It is important to note that it takes approximately 3 months to receive USCIS's approval for OPT, and you may NOT work until approval is received; therefore, it is necessary to plan in advance! In essence, if you are graduating in December, then the time to apply is NOW!!! Before you can apply for OPT, you are required to attend an OPT workshop. The remaining OPT workshops for this semester will be given on Tuesdays and Thursdays: (You do not need to sign up or have an appointment to attend the OPT workshop. Simply show up at the ISSP office (Suite 130 of the North Decatur Building) at one of the designated times) Please note that beginning in January, there will be an online sign up process.
