IMMIGRATION UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ask ISSP Column

I applied for my Social Security Number more than 6 weeks ago, and still I have received no information and no card. What should I do?

The problem you are having with receiving your SSN or any other document from the Social Security Administration (SSA) could be the result of any number of factors. These could include anything from a wrong mailing address to lost or mishandled applications to issues with timeliness or accuracy in entering your immigration information into the databases which government agencies access to verify your lawful entry and presence in the United States. The only way to find out what is your particular problem is to contact the SSA office where you filed your application to find out. ISSP has no more information than you do and is not able to access this information for you; you as the applicant must inquire yourself.

Below you will find the most up-to-date contact information for the Norcross SSA office (Emory's service office) for students or scholars who used this office to apply. There is also information about the Downtown SSA office for those who applied there. Those who applied at another SSA office other than Norcross or Downtown should be directed back to that office.

  • Norcross SSA office: Mr. Paul Coffey - Phone 678-380-0112 extension 3624; Email Paul.Coffey@ssa.gov; Fax 678-924-1616
    • If you have difficulty reaching Mr. Coffey or no response, please call supervisor Mr. Butch Roberts at 678-380-0112 ext. 3206 or Ms. Shara Johnson at 678-380-0112 ext. 3208
  • Downtown SSA office: 404-331-4155 (general office number); Manager is Eileen Salowitz can be reached at Eileen.Salowitz@ssa.gov

If students and scholars continue to have problems or do not receive responses to their inquiries, their best course of action is to visit the office where they applied in person again. If the student or scholar will visit the Norcross office, ISSP will still provide the service of alerting Mr. Coffey to their upcoming visit. We will need to know the date and approximate time of the visit before the student or scholar goes.
