IMMIGRATION UPDATES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
International Rescue Committee Volunteer OpportunityDo you like using your language skills to help others? If so, please consider volunteering with the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The International Rescue Committee opened its regional resettlement office in Atlanta in 1979, at a time when many refugees from Southeast Asia were being resettled in the United States following the Vietnam War. Since then, the office has resettled more than 17,000 refugees from over 30 countries. The IRC provides a wide range of services to refugees in all stages of resettlement and seeks to promote each refugee family's search for self-sufficiency. Currently, the IRC is seeking volunteers for their Life Skills Program with skills in the following languages: Kirundi, Nepali and Arabic. Each Friday, from 9am-11am, the IRC presents seminars on a wide range of topics for their clients designed to help ease the transition into U.S.-American culture and to promote self-sufficiency. Recently, for example, a seminar was held on school systems that outlined what parents could expect their children to do and learn while in school beginning with elementary school all the way through college. Topics included testing, GPA, and FAFSA preparation, to name a few, and questions were answered at the end of the seminar. As a non-profit organization, the IRC depends on volunteers. The IRC would like to open their seminars up to volunteers who are multilingual so that they can serve as interpreters to insure that everyone understands the content. The opportunity will provide each volunteer with valuable hands-on experience and it offers a chance to give back to the community. If you would like to volunteer or just want more information, please contact IRC directly: |
