Welcome Angela!

ISSP would like to welcome Angela Guinyard, the new Senior International Student Advisor. Angela comes to Emory from Spelman College where she was the Coordinator and International Student Advisor for International and Commuter Student Services since 2003. Angela will serve as the international student advisor to Master’s and PhD students in the Schools of Law, Medicine, Public Health, Allied Health, Business, Theology, and the Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences.

Angela grew up in Saluda, South Carolina. She chuckled by saying, “try to locate it on the map.” So I accepted the challenge and found that Saluda is located one hour west of Colombia, SC and one hour north of Augusta, GA. As a native of South Carolina, Angela is a graduate of South Carolina State University.

Angela’s first experience in an international office was at Georgia State University. When she moved to Atlanta 12 years ago, she accepted a position in their international office because she had relocated to Atlanta and simply needed a job until she could find what she thought would be her dream job. Soon after she began employment, she got hooked and fell in love with what she was doing. Angela said, “ I accidentally found my dream.”

Angela and her husband have three wonderful children: a 9-year old son and 22-month old twins. “My kids always keep me busy,” states Angela, “They are the center of my heart.” Angela loves to read whenever she has the time. Her favorite author includes Walter Mosley, who is well-known for his mystery and suspense Easy Rawlings Series. Her favorite magazine, Southern Living, sums up her personality. If Angela could have any other profession at this moment, she wants to be a professional mom. She wants to have the opportunity to take her kids to story time and other activities around town. So, how does Angela juggle her work/home life? Angela answers, “The greatest challenge in the last few years has been to just learn to enjoy the precious time our family has together.”

During her last month at Spelman, Angela had the opportunity to take 50 students on an overseas learning opportunity to Europe. They visited Rome, Florence, and Paris during their 10-day trip. Although each city was amazingly rich in history and culture, she preferred Florence because the Tuscan region is so beautiful, exceptionally stunning, and relaxing.

So, if Angela could take a trip today, where does she want to go? “Believe it or not, I have never visited the Caribbean. If I were leaving Atlanta tomorrow and could go anywhere I would like to go, it would be Saint Lucia.” Angela loves nature and expressed that Saint Lucia would be ideal vacation to just relax and take in the beauty of the island.

Finally, what is her impression of Emory? During her first week at Emory, Angela has commented on the rich diversity of the campus community. Did anything in particular catch her eye? She likes the fact that Emory is an oasis within the middle of an urban community. It reminds her of the area around Spelman. Angela says, “I am very happy to be here and look forward to meeting the students.”

Angela can be reached at angela.guinyard@emory.edu. If you would like to meet her in person, her current walk-in hours are Mondays and Wednesday afternoons, from 1-5 PM.

Welcome to Emory, Angela! We are very happy you have joined us at ISSP!
