English as a Second Language Program - Apply for Fall 2008

Procedure for ESL Enrollment/Emory Employees/Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

You can apply for enrollment in an ESL class as a Special Standing Student if you are an Emory employee and

  • have a regular (not temporary) position at Emory University
  • meet the eligibility requirements (*) for receiving the Courtesy Scholarship Benefit (**) provided to Emory employees through Human Resources; this benefit pays your tuition for up to 5 credits per semester. The ESL Program offers predominantly 4-credit courses; thus, you could take one course per semester. If you register for a class without the Courtesy Scholarship benefit, you will be charged for a 4-credit Graduate School class.
    • If you have worked at Emory less than one year, you can still meet the eligibility requirements for an ESL class since you need ESL for your job responsibilities. You will need to submit an HR Employment Waiver Form signed by your supervisor or Department Head. A copy of this form can be provided to you by the ESL Program.
    • (**) If you do not have a postdoctoral, teaching or research position, you will be taxed (by the Internal Revenue Service) for tuition benefits. Please check with Human Resources for specific information on this taxation policy.

The deadline for receiving application forms for Fall 2008 courses is June 30, 2008. All forms must be delivered to Heather Boldt (101 N. Decatur Bldg). Since space is limited, you should apply early. Special requests after June 30 may be permitted; contact Grace Canseco, Director/ESL Program (grace.canseco@emory.edu)
