Graduate Student Assistant Positions Available 2008-2009

The Office of International Student and Scholar Programs (ISSP) has two 10-month Graduate Student Assistant (GSA) positions available to begin August 1, 2008. The GSA will primarily assist in providing a variety of programs and services for international students and scholars. He/she will assume the following responsibilities:

  • Assist with coordination and implementation of orientation programming for international students and scholars (visiting professors, research scholars, and short-term scholars).
    • Prepare pre-arrival information, edit/update orientation materials.
    • Lead weekly new scholar orientation sessions.
    • Train Student Orientation Assistants.
    • Assist with sessions during new student orientation.
    • Run errands, shop for supplies.
    • MUST DRIVE 15-passenger van to various activities.
    • MUST BE AVAILABLE FOR ENTIRE MONTH OF AUGUST.
  • Assist with coordination and implementation of special social and educational programs for international students and scholars (such as Coffee Hour, President Carter’s Forum, International Education Week, Holiday Reception, etc).
    • Help solicit sponsors and coordinate schedules.
    • Make arrangements, reservations, order supplies, set-up, and food orders.
    • Coordinate weekend trips. MUST BE AVAILABLE TO GO ON TWO WEEKEND TRIPS (Fall Break and Spring Break) during the year and MUST DRIVE 15-passenger van (safety training provided).
  • Provide substantial clerical support and act as primary backup to reception desk secretary
    • Respond to questions of a general nature, referring students and scholars to the appropriate advisor; copying immigration documents, and giving out forms and informational handouts.
    • Answer phones, schedule appointments, and website information.
    • Become familiar with immigration documents, general office procedures, filing, and various issues related to visa status requirements.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.

The position is part-time (20 hours per week) through May 31, 2009 and pays $13.85/hour. GSA candidates need to be reminded that their salary may be taxable. ISSP does not gross up the salary. Preference will be given to those applicants who can schedule flexible work hours during the day with some evening and weekend work required. Some paid vacation time is included.

Applicant must be a graduate student at Emory in good academic standing AND completed at least one year of graduate study at Emory University, be at least 21 years of age, and have a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications: Excellent interpersonal communications skills required including the ability to communicate clearly with persons who speak English as a second language. Ability to liaison professionally with faculty, scholars, students, and support staff in departments throughout the university, as well as with community volunteers is required. Good written, verbal communication and editing skills required. Experience in planning and implementing programming of a social/educational/cultural nature required. Excellent computer skills desired. Past exposure to and appreciation of cultures other than one’s own demonstrated by overseas living experience is a plus.
