J-1 exchange visitors may be allowed to switch program sponsors provided that they maintain the original objective of their exchange program and remain in the same category of the J visa. To transfer J-1 program sponsorship, exchange visitors must have a new agency/institution willing to sponsor them as they continue their original activity.

Transferring programs without leaving the country by changing J-1 sponsorship

You must contact the Responsible or Alternate Responsible Officer (RO/ARO) of your program sponsor to discuss the transfer; you will need to provide the RO/ARO with the name and Program Number of the prospective transfer program, as well as the intended date of transfer. Copies of all DS-2019 forms will be helpful. The RO/ARO will input this information into SEVIS to begin the transfer process.
