STUDENT INFORMATION
EXTENSION OF F-1 STATUS

Definition

The student who is unable to complete her or his program of study by the date of completion listed in item #5 on the I-20 must apply for a program extension. She or he must apply for the extension before the date of completion indicated on the current I-20. If the date has expired and the extension has not been requested, the student is considered out of status and may apply for reinstatement, if eligible.

Eligibility

The student must

  • Have D/S written on the I-94 card (the small white card that is attached in the passport)
  • Have continually maintained status and must be making satisfactory academic progress
  • Prove that the delay was caused by a change of major or research topic, unexpected research problems, documented illness, or loss of credits upon transfer to Emory. Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for program extension.

Procedure

The student must make an appointment with the advisor and

  • Bring along the completed and signed Academic Advisor's Recommendation for Program Extension
  • Bring along the completed I-20 Program Extension Form (the student will need a new I-20 and will for that reason have to provide proof of sufficient financial funding - the advisor can give the necessary amount in a telephone call).
