MAINTAINING J-1 STATUS

Requirements to Maintain Status (Emory Sponsored J-1 Students)

Important policy regarding J-1 Non-Degree students!

  • Maintain a full course of study as defined by your academic division except: during vacation, documented medical problems presented to the Responsible Officer (RO) or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO); bona fide academic reasons in writing from the academic dean or advisor presented to the RO or ARO; final term in which less than a full course of study is needed to complete the academic requirements.
  • Satisfactorily pass the minimum required course work during each academic term.
  • Engage only in employment authorized in writing by the RO or ARO.
  • Comply with all local, state, or federal laws.
  • Keep the Registrar's Office informed of your current telephone number and address.
  • Maintain adequate medical insurance for self and all accompanying dependents. (J-1 students with Emory University as sponsor are subject to insurance requirements for Emory international students, which exceed those stipulated in federal regulations; dependents, however, must only meet levels of coverage outlined in Federal regulations. J-1 students sponsored by exchange visitor programs other than Emory University must follow the insurance requirements of that sponsor.)
