What to bring - necessary items

http://www.emory.edu/HOUSING/UNDERGRAD/bring.html

The Office of Residence Life suggests that you bring the following standard items. This is NOT a list of required items, nor does it represent everything you might want or need:

Telephone (cordless phones are popular), computer, power strip/ surge protector, reading light, alarm clock, disks, pens, scissors, tape, sports equipment, laundry bag (or basket), laundry soap, safety pins, needles and thread, eating utensils, plate, bowl, cup, bedding, sheets, pillows, blanket- iron and small ironing board, bike and bike lock, bath towels, soap, robe, hair products, hair dryer, first aid kit, bandages, aspirin, personal hygiene items, umbrella, all purpose cleaner.

You can purchase these items at local stores and shopping malls if it is inconvenient for you to bring them from home, and, in the case of electrical appliances, it is better to purchase items in the United States, as the electrical current differs here from most other countries.

Georgia's climate is relatively mild. During the summer months the average temperature ranges from 72 degrees F (22 C) to 98 degrees F (31 C), and the humidity can be quite high. The average winter temperature ranges from 46 degrees F (7.8 C) to 60 degrees F (15.6 C). However, the temperature may vary from zero degrees F in winter to as high as 100 degrees F in summer. So, be prepared to dress for both cold and hot weather.

A medium weight overcoat should keep you warm in winter (on colder days, you will also need a sweater). Bring gloves, a raincoat and an umbrella (or plan to purchase them here) as the average rainfall in Atlanta is 50 inches (127 centimeters) per year. Students dress informally for class.

Both women and men often wear slacks or blue jeans with T-shirts or sweat shirts. When more formal dress is appropriate, women usually wear a dress or a skirt, and men wear a shirt and tie, possibly a sports jacket. If you have a suit, you may wish to bring it for such occasions.

It is also helpful if you can bring an international driver's license (check out the American Automobile Association for instructions and application) or your home country driving license with you for additional identification. A credit card can also serve as a form of identification. To open a checking account you are required to have two forms of photo identification, so having a driver’s license in addition to your passport will be helpful.

Also, if you are going to apply for a Georgia driver's license you will need to surrender your home country license or your international driver's license. If you do not want to give up your home country license, then make sure you bring an international driver's license with you.
