Employment

Following the legal procedures to be employed in the US is extremely important. Working illegally can cause serious consequences. Before you begin any type of employment, including teaching and research assistantships, you must come to see your International Student Advisor in the ISSP Office .

For F-1 Students

Students are eligible to work on the Emory University campus, part-time during the school year and full-time during vacations. ISSP authorization is required. No other type of work is allowed for the first academic year that you are in F-1 status. Other work options after this initial period will be discussed at orientation. You may also find further information about F-1 employment options and procedures here on the ISSP website.

For J-1 Students

Students may engage in four kinds of employment when authorized: (1) employment required by a scholarship, fellowship, or assistantship; (2) on-campus jobs unrelated to study; (3) off-campus jobs to meet urgent, unforeseen need; (4) Academic Training related to the field of study.

Whatever type of employment you are considering, you must first obtain written approval for each specific job from your J-1 Responsible Officer who represents your J-1 sponsor and issues your Form DS-2019. You may also find further information about J-1 employment options and procedures here on the ISSP website.
