Expenses

As a student at Emory, you will be responsible for supplying the amount of money indicated on your financial certification form and your I-20 or DS-2019 form. Currently, there are no state, federal, or institutional financial aid resources for undergraduate international students at Emory University.

A current estimate of expenses for one school year should be listed on the financial certification form and your I-20 or DS-2019 sent by the Admission Office.

Make sure that you bring with you funds to cover immediate costs of purchasing health insurance, housing deposit or first month's room and board costs if you plan to live off campus, and your first semester's tuition costs. We suggest that you prepare the amount of money indicated for initial costs (between $1150 and $2000 depending on if you are living on or off campus) in traveler's checks or certified checks. If you are receiving funding through Emory, such as stipends or grants, these funds will not be distributed until the end of September. Taxes will also be taken out of these funds. Therefore, you must bring enough money to live on from your arrival date through September.

We do not recommend that you carry money in your luggage; rather, keep your money with you at all times! Also, be prepared to bring some extra money to buy some daily use items such as towels and sheets.

For more information, please visit the Admission Office homepage at www.emory.edu/ADMISSIONS if you plan to enroll in Emory College, or the Emory website and follow the links to other academic divisions. For financial information, please visit www.emory.edu/studentfinancials. Please note that Emory University does not accept credit card payments.

One of the things you might want to do after settling in Atlanta is to open a bank account at a local bank. It is very common in the United States for people to open a checking account and have a checkbook and check card.

People often use checks to pay for their phone bills and even groceries. Check cards may be used for purchases and at Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs).

It is also a good idea to open a savings account if you have a large amount of money. After you open a bank account, you can have money wired to your account. One week is the normal amount of time to have money wired from overseas.

Important: The following wire transfer information was last updated on February 15, 2008. If you already know your Emory network ID and password, please log in to OPUS for the most recent wire transfer instructions (go to "Learner's Services" > "Finances" > "Wire transfer instructions").

If you plan to wire money directly to the University before you arrive, you follow these instructions:

For Domestic Wires:

Routing No: 061000227
For Credit to: Emory University Acct Number 2000130212986
