HANDBOOK FOR INT'L STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS
Newspapers, radio and televisionThe major newspaper in Atlanta is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. You can subscribe to the paper by calling 404-526-7988 or visiting https://www.formrouter.net/circulation@AJC/subscribe.aspx?cxntlid=circ-hp-hdr, or you can purchase a single edition from vending machines near the post office in the Dobbs University Center. Weekday papers cost 50 cents each; the Sunday paper costs $2.00 per copy, and often it has coupons that can help you save some money when you buy groceries. Student rates are available at the beginning of each semester, if you want to subscribe; look for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution tables in front of the DUC. Creative Loafing is a free weekly newspaper that offers valuable information about Atlanta's restaurants, cultural events, and issues of community interest. It also is a good resource if you are looking for an apartment to rent or you want to purchase second-hand items (like a used car). You can find copies of CL in bins in front of the Emory Clinic building, at the DUC side door that faces the Medical School, at CVS Drugs, and Everybody's (to name just a few places). Usually, the most recent issue is available on Wednesday afternoon or early Thursday morning. There are many radio stations in the Atlanta area, offering a variety of music - jazz, classical, rap, gospel, easy listening, Top 40, hard rock, rhythm and blues, and country - as well as news and sports programs. A list of stations is printed in the Leisure/Arts section of Saturday's Journal-Constitution, but the easiest way to find the stations you like is to turn on a radio and turn the dial! There are nine major television stations that broadcast in Atlanta including the Spanish language channel UnaVision (34). For a monthly fee, you can also purchase cable television service which allows you to view a variety of other TV channels from around the country, as well as some international programs. The company that serves off-campus housing is AT&T Broadband (contact: 888-321-2375). Installation requires a three- to five- day advance notice. There are two major cable providers in the Atlanta area: AT&T and Comcast Cable (1-800-COMCAST). |
