Cost of Living

Our best estimates are that you will need $2000 to help cover your first expenses (deposits, groceries, furniture, household items, rent,) for your first month or two. You should bring part of this as cash, and part as traveler's checks for security. Wire transfers are also available.

  • Rent: $600-$1200/month.
  • Car Insurance: $300-$1500, depending on the car, coverage, and your driving record.
  • Health Insurance: $120-$500/month, based on number of people and coverage.
  • Groceries (family of 4): $500/month
  • Utilities: $150-$200/month

Furniture

Most apartments are unfurnished You can buy furniture new or used, but the costs can vary widely. Local stores like Target (2400 North Druid Hills Rd NE) will carry household items, dishes, tables/chairs, linens, etc. IKEA is also a good resource for inexpensive home and furniture items (441 16th Street) ISSP also supports an online marketplace for buying and selling items within the Emory community.
