Sex Recognition

capuchin

We know from observations that capuchins behave in a sexually appropriate manner to members of the opposite sex, so they are able to distinguish male from female. However, the basis for this knowledge is unknown. Humans can obtain sex information from the face alone, although sex cues can also be extracted from other sources, such as gait and voice. Current studies examine whether sex cues are available in the face alone, or whether other information, such as the whole body or observation of behavior, is necessary. Follow-up studies will also assess the features of the face that are important in making sex decisions.
