Diversity Training
The Office staff provides a variety of diversity training programs. We tailor the workshops to the individual group’s needs and goals. Our staff works with each individual group, from small to large, to identify appropriate diversity training materials, using multi-media resources and/or student panels, to engage the audience and enhance discussion.
The workshops range from one-hour introductory awareness training to longer, focused sessions on cross-cultural dialogue about difference and the value of diversity across social and global contexts. Our library has rich resources on African American, Asian American, Latino American, Native American and multi-racial identity as well as materials from Teaching Tolerance and national higher education conferences.
Our staff has been trained by the National Coalition Building Institute on Welcoming Diversity-Prejudice Reduction Model. The award-winning NCBI Prejudice Reduction Workshop, consisting of a series of incremental, experiential activities that help participants:
- celebrate their similarities and differences;
- identify the information and misinformation they have learned about their own and other cultural groups;
- learn how groups other than their own experience mistreatment;
- develop skills for interrupting prejudicial remarks and behaviors;
- practice listening for understanding and reaching for honesty in interpersonal communications; and
- understand the personal impact of discrimination through the telling of stories; and
- learn the hands-on tools for shifting attitudes in the face of bigoted comments and behaviors.
Participants also experience the NCBI Controversial Issue Process that demonstrates how to move hotly contested issues forward by teaching how to listen first to the heartfelt concerns on all sides, and then reframe the debate in a way that builds bridges.
