Bijli Nanda, PhD

I joined Dr Smith's lab in June 2006 as a postdoc. I started my career as an M.D with a specialization in Physiology from India. Then I was a lecturer in the department of Physiology at the reputed All India Institute of medical Sciences, New Delhi for 3 years, where I was involved in sleep research on rats using EEG,EOG and brain temperature measurements. This is where I developed my interest in neuroscience research.

The Smith lab was the perfect opportunity for me to be involved in neuroscience research combining electrophysiological and anatomical studies. I got the opportunity to work on a project in collaboration with the department of Neurology.  I am looking at the effects of high frequency stimulation (HFS) of the thalamus on the striatum in rhesus monkeys trying to get an idea of how Deep brain stimulation of the thalamus seems to work in Tourettes patients. My project aims at studying the electrophysiological effects of HFS alone and in the presence of glutamatergic, GABAergic and cholinergic agonists and antagonists using microinjection studies. Also, using microdialysis we study the changes in the levels of the various neurotransmitters in response to the HFS. We will also be looking at the synaptic and subsynaptic localization of the NMDA and AMPA receptor subunits at thalamostriatal synapses. Hopefully, this composite study will put us in a better position to understand the underlying mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of Deep brain stimulation and also more insight into the circuitry of the Thalamostriatal system itself.
