• Day-to-day activities : My research projects are geared towards understanding the mechanisms underlying psychostimulant addiction and to the development of effective pharmacotherapies to treat psychostimulant abuse and dependence.  My research utilizes drug self-administration as well as measurements of the behavioral-stimulant effects of drugs in nonhuman primates.  We also examine the neurochemistry of these drugs using in vivo microdialysis in awake monkeys and PET neuroimaging in anesthetized monkeys.  My daily activities include overseeing behavioral, microdialysis, and PET studies as well as the statistical analyses and presentation of these data in poster, oral, and manuscript forms.  I also maintain an active analytical chemistry laboratory that uses HPLC with ECD for analyzing neurochemical samples obtained through in vivo microdialysis.  Less frequently, we perform vascular as well as guide cannulae implantation surgeries.  We have trained undergraduate and graduate students as well as post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists in our methodologies.

• Current Research : ER-associated degradation (ERAD) is an essential
  quality control process that recognizes and degrades terminally
  misfolded ER proteins, and is necessary to maintain cellular
  homeostasis. ERAD is targeted by viral proteins in the evasion of the
  immune system and is associated with the pathogenesis of numerous
  diseases, including cystic fibrosis, liver disease, diabetes,
  neurodegenerative disease, and many others.  The immediate goal of my
  current work is to perform a genome-wide analysis of the
  ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) in ERAD by utilizing a RNAi library
  targeting all UPS components in combination with a high throughput,
  cell-based assay developed in our lab.  The completion of these
  experiments will lead to the identification of novel machinery
  involved in ERAD, advance our understanding of substrate-specific
  ERAD, and potentially provide insight into the pathological mechanisms
  underlying several diseases.
