GIN ACTIVITIES

Annual Neuroscience Retreat

At this event, held in the beautiful mountains north of North Georgia, Neuroscience faculty and students get together to discuss issues of importance and have a blast, all in the same weekend. Morning talks are followed by afternoon volleyball, Randy Hall's fabulous trivia contest, and a GIN-hosted party that usually lasts deep into the night. Faculty members have been known to demonstrate amazing breakdancing abilities at this party, so it is an event not to miss.
Spring Neuroscience Seminar

GIN plans and hosts the annual "Excellence in Neuroscience" Lecture. This event is held in March or April and features a general interest lecture on a neuroscience-related topic from a visiting speaker. The event is open to the entire Emory community, and refreshments are served.
GIN Mixers

Several times a semester, GIN hosts mixers where neuroscience students, postdocs, and faculty can socialize while enjoying excellent beer and tons of snacks. There is a foosball table that adds to the fun, and on Halloween there is a costume contest (we even had a visit from the Duff Beer guy this year, to everyone's delight.)
Annual Poster Competition

The annual GIN poster competition encourages students to clearly and creatively present their research to others in the department, as a way of practicing their presentation skills for more official venues. Due to the support our program receives from Fine Science Tools, Inc., we are able to present the first and second place winners with a travel award in order to attend the annual Society for Neuroscience meeting.
Undergraduate Mentors Program

There is an undergraduate Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology program at Emory, and in the past GIN has been involved in matching NBB undergraduates with Neuroscience PhD students for mentoring and research opportunities.
Sports and Recreation

Groups get together at various times for paintball, canoeing, trips to the local sports bar, etc. GIN has a budget provided by the Graduate Student Council, so some of these events are partially subsidized, which is very cool.
