PHYSICS 361: Analytical Mechanics I Benson MWF 11:45-12:35 MAX: 6 WRT: No For B.A. physics and other mathematical science majors (B.S. physics majors should take Physics 361S). More complete mathematical treatment of classical mechanics, focusing on Newton's second law as a differential equation; dynamics in three dimensional space; mechanics as a variational principle. Includes damped/driven oscillators, conservative force fields, coordinate systems, Lagrangians, symmetries and conservation laws, central forces and planetary motion, rigid bodies and rotations. Prerequisites: Physics 151 (or 141 with Math 112) and Math 211 or Physics 220, or consent of instructor. PHYSICS 361S: Analytical Mechanics I Benson MWF 11:45:12:35 MAX: 10 WRT: No Required for Physics B.S. majors. Lectures joint with Physics 361, but 361S students expected to show more proficiency at quantitative problems. Prerequisites: Physics 151 and Math 211, or consent of instructor. Math 212 and 221 encouraged.
