Assessing Student Learning at Emory

The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (IRE) consults with academic units as they develop and implement strategies to measure student learning at the program level. Strategies include identifying measurable learning goals, the means for measuring attainment of the desired goals, and follow-up activities to review and act on the resulting data. The purpose of these efforts is to provide information that can be used to improve student learning. The student learning assessment initiative at Emory is based on the fundamental principle that assessment should be locally defined, discipline specific, and faculty driven.

This website will serve as an information clearinghouse for program assessment by providing faculty and academic leaders with the tools and information necessary to conduct effective assessment studies in their programs. The documents posted on this site provide the basics on learning outcomes, planning, implementation, assessment methodology, and closing the assessment loop. Examples of assessment plans from other universities, templates for generating reports, and exercises for developing learning outcomes and grading rubrics are provided. You will also find some useful internet resources for assessment in various disciplines.
