Assessment Tools

Barbara Walvoord's "Assessment Clear and Simple: A Practical Guide for Institutions, Departments, and General Education" (Jossey-Bass, 2004) offers a concise, step-by step guide written for everyone who participates in the assessment process. Handouts based on the book are provided under Useful Resources.

In addition, faculty are encouraged to consult the assessment guides developed at UNC-Chapel Hill, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and University of Virginia; these tools offer valuable advice that can guide department chairs and program directors as they develop assessment plans and/or report on current assessment activities. Lastly, the guidelines developed by the Assessment Office at Stanford University provide more detailed guidelines for each step of the assessment process:

Constructing learning outcomes assist you through the process of creating clear and measurable student learning outcomes

Assessment Methods will guide you in designing direct and indirect measures for assessment

Rubrics will take you through the steps of developing a successful rubric to measure student learning and will address effective scoring approaches

Planning and Dissemination presents some useful tips on disseminating assessment findings and using them to make improvements.
