Presented below are links to the Emory assessment reporting template, sample reports, and a checklist that will assist department chairs and program directors in developing an assessment plan and reporting annually on assessment activities. Before working on the reports, programs should review the materials presented in the Assessment Tools.
For the purposes of program assessment, a "program" is an organized, credit-bearing course of study that generally results in a degree at the undergraduate, graduate, or professional level. Decisions to assess student learning goals within other meaningful units -- such as minors, concentrations, or program tracks - are at the discretion of the deans.
We recognize that departments might be at various stages in the development of assessment activities. If your department has already established learning goals and used direct and indirect measures to assess these goals, please report these activities under Steps 1-3 in the assessment report template. Examples of changes based on assessment information (Step 3) are essential as they demonstrate that the program has closed the assessment loop. Use Step 4 to outline changes in assessment processes planned for the next academic year.
If your department is new to the assessment process, use Steps 1 and 2 in the template to establish your learning goals and plan for measures to initiate at the start of the fall 09 semester . You would address Steps 3 and 4 in the template at the end of the 09-10 academic year, reviewing as a department your measures of student learning goals and considering if an action is needed in the following year to improve student learning to meet these goals. Thus, you can fill in Steps 3 and 4 at the end of the 09-10 academic year for that year's assessment cycle and so on for each year. However, for now, if you wish, you may, fill in Step 3 retrospectively. That is, if in the past three years your department or program has made some change to improve student learning towards a degree, you may briefly describe that change in Step 3 and the information and deliberation process that guided your action. This retrospective filling in of Step 3, however, is not required.
A 2-3 page plan/report is expected for each degree program by May 15 and should be sent to Daniel Teodorescu at dteodor@emory.edu.
