Survey of Scholarly Interests in Religion

This work flowed from the faculty discussions that led to the initiatives outlined in Choices & Responsibility, a document which was adopted as the values platform for Emory University. It identified five values of particular concern to Emory: the balance between teaching and research; building a stronger community; encouraging interdisciplinary scholarship; keeping pace with infrastructure needs; and assessing Emory's external relationships. In 1995, Provost Frye along with a group of faculty decided to investigate ways to more closely connect Emory colleagues who have scholarly interests in religion. The faculty group drafted a survey to gather information about scholarly work on questions of religion. The survey was distributed to faculty, students, and department heads. The investigation yielded valuable information about who engages in teaching or research that relates to questions of religion and what are the most frequently explored religion topics at Emory. About a fourth of the respondents have explored religion topics in their research, and many indicated a strong interest in interdisciplinary connections.
