Faculty Studies
Study of Intellectual Initiatives

The study was designed to advance a priority identified in the fall 2000 Provost's letter to faculty: to identify new intellectual initiatives for Emory and name the first of these. Using ideas from discussions of the university's deans, the study aims to identify cross-school programs and explore the evolution, current status, and future plans of some of them; reveal the status of and plans for the supporting infrastructure; and discover the nature of support for the ideas and clusters of intellectual interest that may lead to future programs. In the initial stage of the study IR administered a survey to selected faculty and administrative leaders to determine what programs exist at Emory. Then, we conducted eleven semi-structured interviews with leaders of cross-school programs and others knowledgeable about their genesis and current status. The goal of these interviews was to learn about effective supports and potential barriers at Emory, compare these to similar forces at other universities, and catalog resources for developers of current and future programs. We analyzed the data gathered in these interviews. Three products were produced the summer of 2001 from the study: a database of cross-school programs that was presented on the Web, a brochure featuring profiles of the programs we studied in-depth and lessons from their development and that at other universities, and a more comprehensive white paper presenting our findings.
