Faculty Studies
Qualitative Study of the Luce Seminar Series

This study is an analysis of the influence of the eight-year Luce Seminar Series on three dimensions of faculty culture: faculty intellectual discourse, disciplinary orientation, and scholarly work. Twenty-five of the Luce program's eighty-five participants were interviewed individually, as were eight administrators who either contributed to the shape of the program or had knowledge of its influence on faculty. Findings have helped shape the new Gustafson Seminars for faculty and informed the university about the influence of the interdisciplinary conversation the seminar sustained on faculty culture and participants' notions about universities in future years. Faculty contributed to all phases of this study. Program leader and University Professor Jim Gustafson was an adviser during the formative phases. Two papers were produced from this series, the first is Distances Between Disciplines and is Intellectual Community Across Disciplines.
