Why Faculty Come To Emory

Summary: The article describes the factors that most significantly affect the decisions of prospective candidates to come to Emory. It explores three questions from the analysis of data from interviews that IR conducted between 2000 and 2002 with faculty across all Emory's schools and disciplines. Interviewees were asked what factors most significantly affected their decision to come to Emory; if Emory was the top choice among the institutions that made an offer; and about their perceptions of Emory's compensation package, compared to offers from other institutions. The article reports that six themes explain collectively why junior faculty—assistant professors on tenure-track—come to Emory: The quality of the overall research environment, excellent institutional and departmental reputations, opportunities to start new programs and structures, a strong sense of collegiality, advantageous geographic location, and competitive compensation. All participants, except one, indicate that Emory was their first choice.
