Students at Emory

Systematic studies of students provide important knowledge for the university. Every academic year, we administer the UCLA Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) survey of freshmen; Your First College Year (YFCY) survey; and the Emory College senior survey. In the fall of 1999 and 2001, IR participated in the Higher Education Data Sharing Consortium (HEDS) graduate student survey. These sets of data provide us with longitudinal information on student growth during college years. Other studies IR has conducted include, among others, a survey of admitted students to Oxford College who chose not to enroll; a survey of non-returning freshman students at Emory; a survey of academic integrity; Goizueta Business School BBA Entry survey, and Goizueta BBA Exit survey; Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences (GDBBS) Exit survey; a survey of students at Emory who receive financial aid; and a survey of international students' experiences at Emory. These are some of the other major studies of students the IR Office has undertaken: Graduate school destinations by major for Emory College; completion and time-to-degree analysis for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; evaluation of mentoring programs in physics and chemistry; predictors of success in neurosciences and behavioral biology courses; and also focus groups with Oxford and Emory College freshmen regarding their experiences in the first year.
