This is a call for applications to the Summer 2008 Faculty Writers Program, sponsored by the Office of the Provost. We are introducing peer-facilitated writing groups for 15 faculty members in the humanities and social sciences. The program design is based on feedback from Emory faculty during the 2006-2007 "Year of the Faculty" dialogues and from a pilot project on academic writing conducted in the fall 2007 semester. The goal of the program is to support and encourage intellectual community.
The Faculty Writers Program has two components:
- Interdisciplinary writing groups (3-4 faculty members per group) to provide support for, and feedback on, all aspects of the scholarly writing process.
- An online discussion board that allows participants to keep a daily log of their writing progress and (if desired) to receive feedback from their colleagues and faculty development staff.
Each writing group will select its own facilitator and develop its own schedule and goals. Groups that opt to continue beyond the summer dates will be granted ongoing access to the online discussion board and will be invited to participate in broader discussions of writing during the fall 2008 semester.
Application deadline: April 30
Program dates: 1 June through 31 July
Program requirements: (1) a commitment to work and meet with your writing group at least twice a month; (2) weekly participation in online discussion board with other faculty participants.
To apply, please submit the following to Stacia Brown, Associate Director of Programs, Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Faculty Development at stacia.brown@emory.edu:
- Name, position & rank, department/school
- Title and 1-page description of current writing project.
- Brief responses to the following questions:
- What do you hope to accomplish in a writing group?
- When and why do you write most effectively?
- When and why do you write least effectively?
Participants will be selected based on their availability to participate fully in the summer program and based on the aim of achieving balanced representation within each group — for type of writing project, research field, appointment type, and faculty rank.
Thank you for your consideration.
