ACADEMIC LADDER WRITING PROGRAM FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSORS

This year, the Provost’s Office is offering a writing support program for up to 15 assistant professors who are in their third or fourth year on the tenure track.

The program will be overseen by The Academic Ladder, a faculty development coaching practice overseen by two of the nation’s leading higher education professionals, Gina Hyatt and Jayne London.  This is a unique program that helps faculty members at all stages of research and writing to incorporate a writing habit into their daily lives.  Past participants have found that writing in consistent but relatively short work sessions has enabled them to write more, without compromising their teaching and service activities, and while maintaining the personal and family time that is so important to them. This is a program about working smarter, not harder.

The Academic Ladder will customize this program to your needs, with a brief, confidential phone interview beforehand, to determine what your specific concerns and goals are.  Following that, a one-and-a-half hour workshop for all participants will review the best practical strategies for developing a daily writing plan that will work specifically for you.  The workshop will be followed by a 4-week, online program, in which the goal will be for you to write in short daily writing sessions five days a week.  You will log your writing progress on a daily basis, interact with others about the process of writing, and get help and feedback from the facilitators.  You will be provided with instructions, guidance and feedback on your newly-developing writing process. Unlike some writing groups, you won’t be sharing your actual work with the coaches or other participants (unless you choose to do so on your own.)  This program is solely oriented around the process of writing, not the content.

After two weeks of the online program, there will be a group telephone session with the Academic Ladder facilitators.  You’ll have an opportunity to discuss any problems you’ve had with writing, ask questions, discuss what new strategies to try, and interact with others in the program.

At the end of the four-week online program, there will be a second one-and-a-half hour workshop with the coaches.  At that time, the coaches will review with you your experiences in the program, help you plan your writing strategies for the future, and introduce further techniques for maintaining your level of research and writing productivity.  Please note that all individual information obtained by the coaches will be kept confidential.

The program will begin in early October and end in early November.  Throughout, there will be flexibility in scheduling activities related to your participation.  Key dates that you will want to note are as follows:
