Richard Mendola, Ph.D. is Vice President of Information Technology and CIO for Emory University. In this role, Dr. Mendola is responsible for all Information Technology activities across Emory University and Emory Healthcare. His current focus is on implementing a series of foundation initiatives that will enable an agile, cost-effective IT organization that is aligned with the world-class ambitions in Emory’s strategic plan. Dr. Mendola also serves on the board of the OpenEAI software foundation, an organization that is devoted to fostering standards-based enterprise application integration.
Prior to assuming his current positions, Dr. Mendola was Associate VP of Administrative IT for the University of Illinois three-campus system and Project Executive for UI Integrate, an effort to implement common HR, finance, and student administration systems across the University. Dr. Mendola assumed this position after having been CIO at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center, where he led the effort to implement a comprehensive suite of clinical information systems products. In recent years, the Medical Center has received the Nicholas E. Davies award for having one of the best computerized patient records in the United States as well as CIO Magazine’s Enterprise Value Award. While at the Medical Center, Dr. Mendola was an adjunct faculty member in the College of Medicine and also taught in the College of Associated Health Professions.
Before coming to Illinois, Dr. Mendola held a variety of academic and operational positions at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and his MA, MBA and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Connecticut.
