Associate Vice Provost for Academic Space Planning
Email: william.cassels@emory.edu

William D. CasselsWilliam "Bill" Cassels acts as the liaison between the Provost’s Office and the University community on academic and research space utilization and space planning issues. His duties include the coordination of capital projects that are interdisciplinary in nature or involve multiple schools. He also provides capital project planning support from project idea through construction, ensuring all committee, budgetary, and design approvals are met.

Mr. Cassels also works to develop policies for classroom and office standards, space utilization, and policies for reassignment for highest possible use of underutilized space. He has budget and management responsibility for the Emory Briarcliff Campus.

He joined the Provost's Office in 2001, after spending 10 years with The Emory Clinic in various administrative roles. He started as the Emory Clinic facilities manager and was promoted to director of Facilities, Safety, and Contracted Services where he managed the daily operation of approximately 1 million GSF of clinical and office space in 18 locations around Atlanta. Later he assumed the position of director of Telecommunications during the integration of the Clinic’s Telecommunications Department in the merger of Emory University, Emory Hospitals, and Emory Clinic’s telecommunications and data systems. He was promoted to administrator for Business Services where, among other duties, he oversaw the assignment and build out of the clinical space in the new medical office building at Crawford Long Hospital in 2001.

During his career with Emory Clinic, Cassels was instrumental in introducing new business models to both the Facilities and Telecommunication Departments that saved Emory Clinic and the University hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

After graduating magna cum laude with a B.S. in psychology from the University of Georgia in 1973, Cassels worked as a family counselor for Dekalb County Juvenile Court. He continued his education at Georgia State University, working on a Master's in Counseling degree. After leaving Dekalb County Juvenile Court, he worked for Eastern Air Lines in their In-Flight Services Department until 1991 when he came to work at Emory Clinic. He was awarded an MBA from Goizuetta Business School in 1998, receiving the Mike Lee Outstanding MBA Student Achievement Award.
