Emory University partners with K-12 schools in the Atlanta area in many ways and at many levels, enriching the education of students and providing resources to their teachers. Through these partnerships, Emory students, faculty and staff contribute to student mentoring, tutoring, teacher training, student internships and curricular and co-curricular program enrichments. Some of our current K-12 partnership activities, created by Emory faculty, staff and students, representing all of Emory's Schools, are highlighted in "Emory in the Community" http://www.emory.edu/emoryinthecommunity/ .
Many offices and individual faculty design research and education partnerships that provide opportunities for students to come to Emory for significant experiences. A few such programs include:
- The Michael C. Carlos Museum's Discover Outreach Program hosted more than 8,000 Georgia's school children to visit the museum and another 6,000 benefited from in-class workshops led by the program. www.carlos.emory.edu/
- The Schwartz Center for Performing Arts provides discounted admission to many ticket performances to schools with limited funds schwartzcenter.emory.edu/
- The Goizueta Business School hosts teens at Atlanta's Accounting Career Awareness program www.goizueta.emory.edu/
- The Research Internship and Science Education (RISE) program, funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, engages underrepresented high school students in intensive individual research projects in the Biology department www.biology.emory.edu/research/Corces/RISE.html
- Each summer the Challenge and Champions program engages 40 middle school students, half of which come from homeless shelters, for three weeks of science and math enrichment blended with athletics to strengthen both minds and bodies. www.challengeandchampions.org/brochure_files/brochure_files/C&C%20Brochure%202008.pdf
- The School of Medicine's Summer Science Academy engages more than 100 students from Atlanta in stimulating activities that reinforce science principles while stimulating an interest in potential health care careers. med.emory.edu/education/omesa/ommsa/summercamp/
- The Center for Science Education provides many different opportunities for high school students to engage in summer research and education programs www.cse.emory.edu/
Other programs, large and small, bring Emory faculty, students and staff into the schools through service learning opportunities organized by departments and offices on campus.
- The Office of University-Community Partnerships (OUCP) provides numerous service learning courses and placements supporting education through courses, Fellows programs and innovative projects. www.oucp.emory.edu/
- The Atlanta Urban Debate League (UDL- a partnership between Emory and Georgia State University) and the Computer Assisted Debate (CAD) program engages hundreds of middle school and high school students in many school districts teaching them to research and debate topics across the curriculum. The UDL has been replicated in 20 cities and serves 40,000 at-risk students nationwide. www.emory.edu/BF/comm/com_udl.html
- The Center for Science Education PRISM program pairs teachers with Emory doctoral students in the sciences and math to develop and implement problem-based learning in their classrooms www.cse.emory.edu/
- The Master of Arts in Teaching program places preservice teachers many schools in several school districts www.des.emory.edu/programs/mat.html
- Service learning classes in several departments place undergraduate students in high needs schools to tutor and provide enrichment to students at all levels.
These represent just a few of the many partnerships and programs that bring Emory faculty, staff and students into the education community, and the education community into Emory, to support the education and inspiration of Atlanta's school children and teachers.
A more comprehensive database of partnerships and programs is being developed with Office of University-Community Partnerships and will be available at this site when it is completed.
