PARTNERSHIP FOR PREVENTION
The staff at the Student Counseling Center knows that being a college student involves a transition in life that can engender great pressure and stress. We try to help students understand this transitional period, find ways of coping with crises, and grow from experiences. We work with administrators, academic agencies, and other campus groups to increase the effectiveness of student services in the area of mental health and to prevent problems from arising.
WITH YOUR HELP
Emory faculty are one of our primary resources in accomplishing these tasks. Faculty often are the first to note that a student is in some kind of emotional trouble. In the past, referrals from faculty literally have saved lives.
SERVICES
The Counseling Center provides individual, couples, family, and group therapy for students, as well as consultation and workshops for various university organizations. We maintain extensive referral information for students who need low-cost or full-fee mental health services that the center does not provide. The center operates a stress-management clinic where students learn how to positively manage stress in Emory's rewarding but stressful environment.
THE QUESTION OF COST
Regularly enrolled, fully registered Emory undergraduates and graduate students are eligible for services free of charge. In instances where students are referred outside the center, student health insurance often can be used.
WAITING LISTS
The Counseling Center tries to see students as soon as possible; there is never a lengthy wait for an initial contact. When demand is heavy, however, we do maintain a waiting list for students who choose to wait rather than be referred. These students are assigned a contact person who will stay in touch with them until a regular therapist becomes available. As a faculty member you may have information about a student that will help us decide on a proper course of action if there is a waiting list.
CONFIDENTIALITY
The Counseling Center maintains strict rules of confidentiality. Information shared between client and counselor cannot be released to anyone—including family or university—without the consent of the student. We make exceptions to this rule only when extreme harm could come to the client or another person if confidentiality is maintained or when required by law (e.g., child abuse). In such cases, the counselor will attempt to discuss with the client the reason confidentiality must be broken. As a faculty member, confidentiality may be a bit frustrating to you, since you may want feedback about your referral. Please respect that confidentiality is a legal requirement and is practiced in the student's best interest. Confidentiality facilitates an air of trust between client and counselor. While you likely will not get any information back about a student whom you referred to the center, it is always helpful for you to communicate your specific concerns about a student before or after the referral.
TO MAKE A REFERRAL
Often the first indicator that a student is in emotional trouble occurs in the classroom. For example, the student may stop attending classes or slip in academic performance. You also may notice that the student seems more tired, more unkempt, or not as happy as usual. Your first step may be talking to the student and expressing your concern. Next you might consider making the student aware of the center as a resource. The Counseling Center is located in 217 Cox Hall, and the telephone number is (404) 727-7450. Persons interested in talking to a counselor can call or come to the center Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Or make an appointment for a convenient meeting time.Making a referral is usually easier if you actually have met a member of our staff and if you can give the student information about how the center operates (e.g., how to make an appointment, where the center is located, confidentiality, etc.). We would be please to have you call the center during office hours to arrange a time for one of our professional staff to attend one of your departmental staff meetings. It is our hope that you will keep the address of this site handy and use it when the occasion arises. Thank you in advance for your help and support.
