Call to Order and Welcome II. Approval of Minutes III. Ben Johnson- the search for a new president The search committee is currently asking the Emory community to give them input as to what they should be looking. The committee will be meeting with several university groups, such as the College Faculty Council, Council of Deans, Grady, Alumni Association, the Employee Council, and others, to try to gather this information. The places and times for these meeting will be publicized in the Emory Report and the search web site. The next meeting of the search committee will be Feb. 7, then they will meet with the Board of Trustees (BOT) and then another meeting of the search committee will be held on Feb. 14. Mr. Johnson opened the floor up for questions and comments. Cassarella asked how the Faculty Advisory Committee was being formed and suggested that the university's Faculty Council be that committee. Stroccia wanted to know what the BOT think are the chief attributes for the job. Mr. Johnson said that they had not established a profile. Aue asked what the role of the search firms is. Mr. Johnson responded that the firms had the time and resources to locate qualified candidates nation wide. Vandall asked him to address the idea of suspending current searches to focus on the president search. Mr. Johnson stated that, so far the candidates for the current searches, acceptance of a position here at Emory does not seem to be effected by who the president will be. So the searches will continue unless it becomes an issue. The comment was made that the current searches were for positions that are also part of the President's Cabinet, so wouldn't the president want to have a say in the choosing of these people. Mr. Johnson replied that people are always coming and going and that you have to start somewhere. The new president will be involved with the future search for a provost. Branch commented that faculty have a strong desire for Emory to move forward and to be involved. A suggestion was made that the Executive Committee of the Senate/Faculty Council come up with some names for the the Faculty Advisory Committee Lindskog suggested that there be an interactive web site for the search. Strocchia brought up the issues of teaching versus research. Mr. Johnson mentioned the Commission on Research should be addressing these issues and that a report was due out soon. He also thought that some of the people on the Commission should be on the Faculty Advisory Committee. Snarey added that in addition to the issues raised so far, he feels that the President should be someone who has a passion for the University itself instead of this just being a good career move. A question was raised as to Jim Laney's involvement with the search. Mr. Johnson said that Laney, Clough (GA Tech President) and Jimmy Carter were all interested in the search and have offered their help. Mr. Johnson concluded by inviting people to contact him directly. His email is bjohnson@alston.com IV. Adjourn
