Committee Bylaws

The University Research Committee (URC) is a standing committee of the University Faculty Council. The Chair is elected by the members of the Committee and serves as an ex-officio member of the faculty Council. Members are nominated by any interested party to the Chair of the Committee and are approved by the Faculty Council. Members are selected from among the regular full-time members of the faculty of the University, with particular care to ensure representation from the diverse units and disciplinary areas. Members serve for three years and are eligible to serve so more than two consecutive terms.

The Committee's charge is to administer the Research Fund established by the Provost, in close cooperation with the Vice-President of Research. Its responsibilities include:

  • establishing the criteria for selection of projects to be funded;
  • establishing the guidelines for the submission of proposed projects;
  • selecting the projects for funding;
  • disseminating to the faculty information about the process;
  • reporting annually (at the April meeting ) to the Faculty Council on the work of the Committee.

Annual Report
University Research Committee
1999-2000

Submitted by: Josiah N. Wilcox, Ph.D., Chair University Research Committee

April 11, 2000

Enclosed is a copy of the Annual Report for the University Research Committee as requested. We were budgeted $1,050,000 for 1999-2000, of this $54,000 was spent on administration, $520,6999 was awarded in the Fall for 22 research grants and $475,301 will be awarded this spring. The spring review process will be completed by April 24th and the final awards will be made shortly thereafter. I estimate that we will be funding about 20 applications this spring.

It is my understanding that the URC has been budgeted $1,125,000 for the 2000-2001 school year an increase of $75,000.

We have recently completed an extensive review of how the URC awards help faculty publish and bring in outside research grants. Since 1983 the URC has given out a total of $4,373,888 in awards which has generated $51,363,753 in outside research funding as well as aiding in the publication of 72 books and 580 research papers. This is an outstanding record of accomplishment which we hope to maintain in the future.
