Dear Members of the Emory Faculty,
Welcome to the University Faculty Council website.
The Faculty Council is comprised of elected and appointed members representative of all schools of the university. Unlike similar bodies in other universities, the Council does not spend its time on tenure and promotion reviews (these are handled by the President’s Advisory Committee, also a body comprised of elected faculty representatives). Instead, the Council discusses policies and matters of interest to all faculty of the university, and provides faculty comment and perspective to the administrators responsible for various areas of the work of the university. Several committees of the Council work on particular matters of interest to the faculty.
Unlike some other universities, the President does not preside over the Faculty Council. Instead, the President and Provost are ex officio members of both of this body. Their regular participation – along with other administrators – enhances discourse about initiatives and challenges facing Emory faculty, allows for open flow of information, and strengthens the trust in our common work. These efforts help to ensure that Emory remains a destination university for faculty.
The Chair of the Faculty Council also serves as President of the Senate. The Chair, Chair Elect, and Past Chair of the Faculty Council formulate the agendas for the monthly meetings. They also meet regularly with the President and the Provost. They leadership of the Faculty Council welcome your input about agenda items and will do their best to communicate directly with the faculty regarding key issues and initiatives.
Please let me know what other information would be helpful, and thanks again for your interest and support. Also, please feel free to email me with questions, concerns, or items that you would like addressed. Our goal is to be as responsive as possible to the members of the Emory Faculty.
Sincerely,
Steve D. Culler, PhD
Chair, Faculty Council
