Senate Standing Committee Goals and Rosters

2005-2006

Campus Life Committee

Goals for 2005-2006:

Consistent with the opening sentence of the University's mission statement:

"Emory University's mission is to create, preserve, teach and apply knowledge in the service of humanity"

the goal of the Campus Life Committee of the University Senate is to examine the role that volunteerism and community service continues to play in shaping Emory students.  From our initial examination, we know the following:

        •  community service is an extremely valuable ad critical aspect of education,

        •  community service fosters a culture of giving back

        •  community service helps students develop an appreciation for and an awareness

of the struggles that many individuals face in their daily lives

        •  community service builds self-confidence, self-esteem and a sense of social

            responsibility

        •  community service reinforces and strengthens learning.

Our committee will attempt to look more closely at these issues with regard to our own students.   A parallel goal for our committee is to examine ways in which the University can formally and informally support those student organizations and University offices that are already putting students into the community through service.  Those organizations are:

               Volunteer Emory

               Volunteer Oxford

               Emory Read

               Habitat for Humanity at Emory

               Alternative Spring Break

               Office of University-Community Partnerships

Members of my committee are:

Vera Rorie, Director, Office of Multicultural Programs and Service

Arri Eisen, faculty member in Biology

        Virginia Plummer, Student Health

Sam Engle, Office of University-Community Partnerships

Crystal McLaughlin, Director, Student Development Oxford College, Director,

          Volunteer Oxford

        Melody Porter, Director, Volunteer Emory

I have student representatives from the following student organizations:

        • Alternative Spring Break -  Gillian Pervers

        • Habitat for Humanity - Dana J. Alsen

        •  Emory Read - Andrea Palmimter

Our goals are to:

Generate at least 20 new nominations for honorary degrees from the Emory community

Recommend to the Senate and Trustees a slate of 3-4 to receive honorary degrees

Richard Levinson, Chair

Campus Development Committee

Goals 2005-2006

Campus Development (CDC) will continue to review new building projects, site

locations and road development to keep within the Master Plan guidelines and

principles.  We hope to provide constructive and relevant feedback on proposed

and active projects that will affect the appearance and condition of the

campus.

Continue to review plans from the Alliance to Improve Emory Village (AIEV) and

understand how changes to the village may impact the campus community.

Begin review of the committee structure and purpose in order to make the

committee a more relevant and effective voice in support of campus planning and

services.

Committee on the Environment

Goals 2005-2006

COE’s charge is to review capital projects for their environmental impact and to make policy recommendations.   Our goals are pretty much the same as last year since the Campus Plan and Transportation Policy remain in process.

  1. Ensure that environmental values are represented in our strategic plans and policies.
  2. Embed environmental standards in individual capital projects and processes.

Improve communications with campus and surrounding communities.

Library Policy Committee 2005-2006

The Library Policy Committee works with library staff and administration, the Vice Provost/Director of Libraries, the Director of the Oxford College Library, and the directors of other campus libraries to enhance the quality, utility, and accessibility of libraries for the entire Emory community. It advises the Senate and the Directors of libraries on significant policy issues, acts as a channel of communication between users and the General Libraries, and assists in communicating library concerns to the University administration and other units within the University. Issues the Committee plans to address in 2005-2006 include:

Library storage issues: continuation of installation of moveable compact shelving in Woodruff stack tower (5th level installation to start at end of Spring semester).

Scholarly communication issues and library materials budgets, particularly in sciences and health sciences (changing the models for scholarly communication)

Additional Woodruff library entrance on Goizueta Business School side; possible extension of Woodruff library hours on weekends

              Library user service issues

Continued attention to network access in libraries

Better integration of professional school libraries into our discussions
