Campus Development Committee

Progress Report

2005-2006

At the September 2005 meeting, The Campus Development Committee reviewed the progress and goals as established for 2004/2005. The committee members engaged in a lively discussion regarding the purpose and relevance of the Committee relating to the Master Plan for the campus and decision-making on site locations and road development.  The general feeling of the group discussion was that the Committee is important to the Emory Community and will become more important as the campus continues to expand.  The Committee decided to meet on an “as needed basis” with the monthly meetings already scheduled for 2005/2006 remaining on the calendar as scheduled

One of the goals 2004/2005 was to more fully develop and implement the Public Art Review Committee. A report from Judy Rohrer, the chair of the Public Art Review Committee, advised that the PA was now reporting to the Provost.  In the future the PAC will seek approval from the CDC but will not be a subcommittee of the CDC.

Approved projects for 2005/2006 include:

·         Revised curb cut design for North Oxford Road

·         Dowman Drive Road Redesign

·         New Freshman Hall

·         Candler School of Theology Building

·         Fishburne Deck curb cut on N. Decatur Road

The CDC continued to review new building projects, site locations for art/sculpture, grounds and road development to keep within the Campus Master Plan guidelines.  We made every effort to provide constructive feedback on proposed and active projects that would affect the appearance and function of the campus.

We expanded our knowledge of campus initiatives by having several presentations during the year.  We reviewed the Campus Master Plan with Campus Planning personnel.  We reviewed and made suggestions to the draft document “Sustainability Vision for Emory” prepared by the Sustainability Task Force. Our suggestions were received and incorporated into the final document.  The proposed new shuttle plan and campus shuttle routes were presented by V.P for Campus Services.  We had good discussion of the impact the new transportation plan would have on the campus and the surrounding community.

A current goal is to have more active student participation in the work of the committee.  We will try in Fall 2006 to attract some additional undergraduate and graduate student members.

As a committee we are concerned that the Emory Village plans are not being shared openly and in a timely fashion.  We have had no recent update since we approved the Dowman Drive Road Redesign.  We want to be assured that the Emory Village process is following the EU established guidelines for formally sharing information and receiving of approvals.

Respectfully submitted
