Minutes of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
February 19, 2001

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were Steve Batterson, Meredith Curtin, Ronald Johnson, Jean Jordan, Myron Kaufman, Edith Murphree, and Betsy Tanner. Ex officio members present were Dan Magee and Mary Romestant. Visiting were Anna Manasco, President of the Student Government Association (SGA), and Sarah Byrd, member of the NCAA Student Advisory Committee of the University Athletic Association (UAA).

Sarah reported on the meeting of the NCAA Student Advisory Committee. Each UAA school had two representatives. The students discussed efforts to counter apathetic student bodies; to increase communication among students, faculty and staff; and to encourage the participation of the faculty and staff (faculty-student breakfasts). Other items were different venues for UAA events and doing coaches' surveys so that the athletes could critique the programs and comment on such things as "optional" practices (NCAA rules limit the number of required practices). A new effort at Emory will be to pair men's and women's teams to get more participation.

Anna and the SGA have used the past year to build bridges, both in academic concerns and athletics and recreation. By committing $35,000 of the student activity fee to the installation of lights on the soccer field, they signaled their commitment to campus capital improvements by investing resources. Their second improvement (approved by the University) is the installation of a sidewalk along Peavine Creek Drive to Candler (Lower) Athletic Field. Next on the agenda is Project McDonough Field, which includes installing a drainage system for the turf, pavers around the stage, and a freight elevator to the stage so that large trucks do not drive on the field itself. SGA, the College Council, and Student Programming all support this effort, and hope to commit $125,000, or half of the total cost, thereby challenging the University to come up with the other half.

Anna strongly recommended that the Committee ask the next president of SGA, Chris Richardson, to appoint a liaison, perhaps a student active in intramurals to complement the varsity and club sports representatives, and that we inform SGA of our own needs and priorities for athletics and recreation at Emory.

The Committee will make a list of priorities at the April meeting. Ruth will invite the new SGA president to this meeting.

Ruth will inquire of Dan Adame about the possibility of having an ex officio faculty member from the Department of Health, Physical Education and Dance attend meetings. She will also work with Chuck Gordon to schedule a cookout for Committee members and varsity team coaches.

Ruth announced that Joe Moon (Associate Dean for Campus Life, Oxford) and Martin Grimm (Athletics Director, Oxford) will attend the next Committee meeting on March 25 at 4:00 P.M.

Respectfully submitted, Betsy Tanner
