PERSONNEL
Chuck Gordon, Athletic Director, reported on the following items:
Introduced Jenny McDowell, the new Associate Director of Athletics and Recreation who is also the volleyball coach.
Discussed various personnel issues; the search for a Facilities Coordinator has reached the telephone interview stage.
FACILITIES
The Brookwood Group is assessing the program space for WPEC, including the roof space.
The University Apartments project is being reviewed from the Campus Master Plan viewpoint.
The Emory West tennis courts project: A major concern of the Druid Hills Historical Society is lighting. These courts need to be ready before the courts on the WPEC roof are removed.
Facility closing in January: The cause was water main breaks allowing mud to clog valves and filters. The closing was due to no fire protection.
Suggestions for notifying the Emory community included a posting on the web page and a message via the university-wide e-mail list.
Softball facilities: This is a Title 9 issue. The softball field (women) needs to have facilities comparable to Chappell Park, the baseball field (men), including locker rooms, restrooms, and a press box. As usual the issue is funding. A temporary solution would be trailer rentals. Ruth Pagell will draft a motion supporting the improvements necessary to the softball field.
Other funding issues include removing the rooftop tennis courts, fixing the leaking roof and stabilizing the building, and building the Emory West tennis courts.
ATHLETES' GRADES AND PARTICPATION
The varsity athletes team average GPAs are the highest they have been for a while.
Gender Equity: Overall sports participation is up due to significant increases in track and field (from projected numbers). The woman student-athlete percentage is within the target range of the Office of Civil Rights.
Dinner of the Committee members and the varsity team coaches is scheduled for Monday, February 21, at 7:00 PM.
The next meeting of the Committee will be February 21, 2000, at 5:30 PM in the Woodruff PE Center Conference Room.
Respectfully submitted, Betsy Tanner
