Minutes of the Meeting of the Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
March 25, 2002

The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were Steve Batterson, Meredith Curtin, Ronald Johnson, Jean Jordan, Myron Kaufman, Edith Murphree, Vicki Powers, Betsy Tanner, and Angie Ahlquist. Ex Officio members present were John Arenberg, Chuck Gordon, Martin Grimm, Dan Magee, and Mary Romestant. Visiting were Joe Moon, Associate Dean for Campus Life (Oxford), Martin Grimm, Director of Athletics (Oxford) and Chris Richardson, President of the Student Government Association.

OXFORD ATHLETICS
Joe Moon gave a brief history of the fall and rise of varsity sports at Oxford College. Beginning in the early 1980's, there were fewer students to play on varsity teams, the faculty who also coached were overburdened, and recreational sports were on the rise. So intercollegiate sports were eliminated and Oxford students played with the Emory varsity teams. Then four years ago Oxford decided to revisit the issue of intercollegiate sports, and proposed having men's and women's teams in basketball, soccer, and tennis. The school began with varsity programs in women's soccer, men's basketball, and men's and women's tennis. Two years ago the National Junior College Athletic Association said, "Join us or we cannot play you." (Games with Oxford did not count for NJCAA teams' win-loss records, etc.) By joining, Oxford could play in NJCAA tournaments and get Association benefits. Without those teams, there is almost no one to play.

Martin Grimm outlined the current status at Oxford. For the academic year 2002-03, Oxford will go by NCAA rules governing start-dates for practice and for the season; afterwards, Oxford will use the NJCAA dates and no Oxford student can play on an Emory varsity team. At the moment Oxford is not trying to grow the program, primarily due to facility limitations. Soccer and basketball have great student support (up to 200 student fans at basketball games). Games are broadcast on a local AM radio station. The tennis program needs a full-time coach. The varsity program is viewed as being very positive for Oxford College.

SPORTS UPDATE
John Arenberg gave a brief update on the recent varsity team highlights. At the NCAA Division III national championships in swimming and diving, the women finished third, the highest finish in school history. The men also finished in third place, the third year in a row that Emory has finished in the top three in the nation. The women's softball team has swept three tournaments this season, with a perfect 18-0 record. Overall they are 24-2. Men's baseball finished second in the annual University Athletic Association championship.

FACILITIES UPDATE
Chuck Gordon gave the following updates. At the Clairmont Campus, the Student Activity and Academic Center is under construction, the pool is dug, and the target for completion is mid-December. The WoodPEC roof project is waiting funding.

FEEDBACK ON COMMITTEE ACTION
The male tennis player from California, for whom the Committee waived the prohibition on paid recruiting trips to Emory, has been offered a Woodruff Scholarship.

A correction to the February minutes: the McDonough Field cost is $280,000 and does not include the pavers at the stage or the freight elevator.

The spring Victory Bell is scheduled for April 25 at 7:00 PM.

The next meeting of the Committee will be April 22 at 4:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Betsy Tanner
