Minutes
of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
March 4, 2003
The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell at 4:15 in room
319 of the Student Activities and Academic Center (SAAC) at the Clairmont
Campus. Members present were Steve Batterson, Andrew Butler, Ron Johnson,
Myron Kaufman, Harvey Klehr, Edie Murphree, Betsy Tanner, and Anand Mehta.
Ex Officio members present were Chuck Gordon, Dan Magee, Mary Romestant, and
Myra Sims. Frank Gaertner, Director of SAAC, hosted the meeting.
Ruth introduced Andrew Butler, who will formally join the Committee in 2003-04. New student members are Nathaniel Burris (SGA) and Donley Zifkin (female varsity athlete).
Frank took the committee on a tour of the SAAC, which will be fully functional on March 17th. Points of interest within the building are the College administrative space, the computer lab, café with deck/patio and outside window service, an exercise area, a multipurpose room, and the gym (basketball, volleyball, and badminton). The gym can be set up for banquets, complete with audiovisuals, sound, and lower lighting. The multipurpose room can accommodate small conferences. Outside are swimming pools, tennis courts (asphalt and clay), a sand volleyball court, a basketball court, and a grass recreational field.
Chuck Gordon gave brief updates on the following items:
· Woodruff PE Center roof project: The present scope will fix the roof and berm leaks, add a loading dock, fix up the three entrances, and add enclosed tennis courts, a multipurpose room, and a weight training room for PE classes and varsity athletes. Other needs/requests put the job over budget. There is a need for office and classroom space for future expansion, and for varsity lockers. The project will next to the Real Estate, buildings, and Grounds Committee in April and to the Board of Trustees in May. Repairs should begin in July and be finished in March or April 2004. The biggest impact is expected to be noise. Cutting through the current roof to access the supporting columns will require blocking off certain areas and will produce construction dirt.
· Search for a new women’s basketball coach: Application received number more than 100 and are arriving at the rate of ten to fifteen per day. The first review is scheduled for March 15th.
· Swimming - NCAA national championships hosted by Emory University for women (March 13-15) and men (March 20-22): Eighteen Emory women have qualified for the meet, a first for the Emory record books and the only team boasting a full roster. They should do very well. The men will be in a “dogfight” for the top five spots. Volunteers are needed to help with both meets.
The next
meeting will be April 15th at 6:00 PM at the Miller-Ward House, followed by
the Victory Bell at 7:00 PM.
