Minutes
of the Meeting of the
Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
November 28, 2001
The meeting was called to order by the
Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were Steve Batterson, Ronald Johnson,
Myron Kaufman, and Betsy Tanner. Ex Officio members present were Dan Adame,
Chuck Gordon, Dan Magee, and Mary Romestant. Guest attendees were Scott
Murphy, Andy Peck, and Sally Radell from the Department of Health, Physical
Education, and Dance.
Dan Adame, Chair of the Department of Health,
Physical Education, and Dance, gave an overview of the department members (twenty-one),
the teaching load (2500 students per semester), and the use of the Woodruff
PE Center (WoodPEC) (classes from 8:30 to 3:00, with the remaining time used
by the recreational and varsity programs). The lack of sufficient classroom,
office, and storage space is the most pressing problem. The biggest change in
the Department recently has been the creation of the undergraduate major and
minor in Dance. For the Dance program the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts
will provide one studio and three offices. Presently this program also uses
the Rich Building but still teaches 80% of the classes in WoodPEC. Whether any
teaching space will be available in the Student Activity and Academic Center
under construction at Emory's Clairmont Campus is an issue that probably will
be decided by Rosemary Magee (Emory College Office) and Todd Schill (Residential
Services).
Facilities Updates
A) Chuck Gordon informed the Committee that the roof repairs and expansion may
be delayed up to five years. The past remediation for the leaking problems will
not last that long. WoodPEC usage is about 65,000-70,000 people per month.
B) Dan Magee reported that the current work
on McDonough Field is just repair. Hopefully, when the steam line work is done,
proper drainage and recrowning can be supported by Facilities Management.
C) There are six new elliptical machines,
purchased by Athletics and Recreation and Recreational Services. There has been
some useful feedback from the posting of the telephone numbers and email addresses
for Mary's and Dan's offices. The majority of the feedback still comes from
the comment cards.
Oxford Update - Oxford College has
joined the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. Due to the difference
in rules between that Association and NCAA, Oxford students will not be eligible
to play on Emory varsity sports teams after the 2002-2003 year. Also at that
time, Oxford College students will not be included in the gender equity numbers.
Chuck asked that the Committee review the
prohibition placed on paying for recruiting visits to campus. The Faculty Athletics
and Recreational Policy Committee established this policy in the 1980's, when
the varsity sports programs began and the focus was on basketball. At issue
is a nationally ranked 16-and-under tennis player whose trips to Harvard, Princeton,
and Washington University will be paid for by those universities. He is currently
a scholarship student at a prep school in California, and should certainly be
admitted to Emory based on his academic credentials. The Committee members agreed
to allow Chuck to invite this recruit as an exception. The policy in general
will be discussed at the next meeting.
The Committee made several suggestions to
Ruth concerning issues and guests for meetings during Spring Semester, 2002.
