Minutes
of the Meeting of the Faculty Athletics and Recreational Policy Committee
October 30, 2000
The meeting was called to order by the Chair, Ruth Pagell. Members present were Steve Batterson, Ronald Johnson, Edith Murphree, Polly Price, Betsy Tanner, and Molly Cobbs. Ex Officio members present were John Arenberg, Chuck Gordon, and Lynn Nester (for Dan Magee). Brian McGuire, Assistant Director for Sports Medicine, was a guest.
John Arenberg, Sports Information Director, reported on the culmination of the fall season for varsity sports (some information supplied by e-mail). The Cross Country Men's team finished second at the University Athletic Association (UAA) championships, matching its highest showing ever, and will defend its NCAA regional championship, which it won last year for the first time in school history, on Nov. 11. Senior Adam Carlson became the second Emory runner ever to win the conference individual championship and to make the all-conference team all four years.
The Cross Country Women's team finished third at the UAA championships and is seeking a tenth consecutive trip to the NCAA national championships Nov. 18.
The Women's Soccer Team has been selected for the NCAA national tournament for the sixth time in eight years, winning the UAA title with a conference record unbeaten streak of 23 games (17-0-6). Emory will host the regional playoffs November 4 and 5. The Men's Soccer season ended with third place in the conference, one of the few times in UAA history that they have not been first or second, losing four games, all by one goal.
The Volleyball Team placed second in the UAA championship finals at Emory, narrowly missing defeating its conference rival, Washington (MO). With a 30-3 record and ranked fourth in the country, the team could go to the NCAA national tournament. Jennifer McDowell and assistant Ruth Donahoo were chosen UAA co-Coaching Staff of the Year.
Women's Tennis Team player Mary Ellen Gordon became the first freshman to win the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional singles championship, the first Eagle to win the national singles title for NCAA Division III, and also the first Division III player to advance to the final of the "Super Bowl" of small college tennis since 1993. No Division III player has ever won the "Super Bowl".
Men's Tennis Team player Brett Kaplan won the ITA regional singles championship and was second in NCAA Division III singles. He and Michael Miller placed fourth in NCAA Division III doubles.
Golf is finishing up its fall season. Men and Women's swimming has begun, with a win for both in their first meet.
INSURANCE
Brian McGuire discussed the student insurance provided by College Health Concepts for Emory Univesity and its ramifications for PE students and varsity, club, and intramural athletes. Emory self-insures to cover any balance beyond varsity athletes' primary coverage for injuries in their sport; a two-tier system providing additional coverage for participants in club and intramural sports would be beneficial. The Athletics and Recreation Program supports a part-time trainer for minor injuries and treatment. Unfortunately. Janice K. Latoza, Administrative Director of Emory University Health Service was unable to attend our meeting. *
CHUCK'S REPORT
Chuck Gordon, Athletic Director, reported on the following items. The slab is poured for the softball field building; walls will go up when the door framing arrives. The NCAA Division III Institutional Self-Study must be completed by the end of February. Ruth and Betsy will work on it with Chuck. Oxford college is researching whether to join the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association. An issue is how this would affect gender equity We discussed the recurring subject of facilities maintenance and the lack of cleanliness in Woodpec. Weekends are a special challenge. The Committee will continue to look into this.
The next meeting of the Committee will be Tuesday, December 5, at 4:00 P.M. in the Woodruff PE Center Conference Room. Our guest will be C J Drymon of Institutional Advancement. Also, SGA and Varsity Athletic Rep Ryan Muetzel will be reporting on student /varsity athletic issues. Respectfully submitted, Betsy Tanner
